Worktops - Care and Maintenance

Granite is a very though natural stone. It is beautiful and long lasting. Ideally suited to countertops and worktops in kitchens and bathrooms. Granite is waterproof, heat resistant, and scratch resistant – it will wipe clean with a damp cloth/sponge. New Granite should be sealed as soon as it is fitted and resealed on a regular basis approx every 4 months. Oil based substances can sink into granite and take a long time to dry out so we recommend that all spills are mopped up immediately. Granite worktops can stain and are not impervious to damage so keep your granite worktops and surfaces looking their best for many years to come.

Caring for your Granite

  1. Do not rub the granite with abrasive materials such as metal pads, scouring detergents, wire wool or alkaline and chlorine based cleaners or bleach. Wash with warm water. Rinse with clean warm water and dry with chamois leather.
  2. Split liquids should be mopped up immediately. Most risk substances are highly alkaline or acid liquids such as lemon juice or vinegar, oil based substances such as butter and cooking oils, hot oil splattering from cooking pans around the cooker. Wire, detergents and alcohol.
  3. Do not allow any build up of salt or detergent on your worktop.
  4. Avoid strong acids or chemicals including paint stripper, brush cleaner, nail varnish remover or similar products.
  5. Surfaces should be resealed every 4 months to reduce the granite's natural porosity.
  6. Do not strike your granite with blunt heavy objects. It can chip and crack. Edges are most at risk if physically abused.
  7. Do not expose the granite to excessive heat. Avoid placing hot pans on the surface, directly from the hob.
  8. We would recommend the use of a chopping board.

For Stain Removal

  1. Use water based stain remover for removal of stains such as wine, coffee, nicotine and fruit juices.
  2. Use alkaline degreaser for removal of dirt such as greasy spots, smoke stains, wine etc.
